Community leader offers tips for struggling start-ups

UTHUNGULU Community Foundation CEO Chris Mkhize has written a new book to assist local entrepreneurs get their start-ups off the ground and sow the seeds for sure success.

Think, Plan, Write and Share is a how-to guide for making it in the business world, covering everything from grant writing, finding funding and business planning, to procedures at meetings, skills required for young South African job seekers and working with management.

Mkhize draws from more than three decades of work experience in both the public and private sectors to enlighten his readers.

He has been a director on the board of Pep Stores, the Industrial Development Corporation, KZN Transport Corporation, Khulani Holdings and the Natal Sharks Board, among others.

His passion for small business lies in his belief that it is the backbone of the economy.
‘Entrepreneurs are heroes,’ said Mkhize in the book’s introduction.

‘They obtain funding from moneylenders, commercial banks, government, investors and donors to develop new products, provide services, encourage innovation and create jobs.

‘Some of these entrepreneurs fail merely because they might not have initially known what they were getting into.’

To avoid this common cause of business closures, he also included basic graphs, Q&As, simple steps and top tips on properly prepping before opening shop.

The book will be sold for R170 at the ZCBF offices in Richards Bay from this Friday.
