ZO journo makes the headlines

Zululand Observer journalist awarded Cadet of the Year.

ZULULAND Observer news hound Wellington Makwakwa scooped top honours earlier today during the Caxton Editorial Cadet graduation ceremony in Johannesburg.

The ZO reporter outdid 15 other cadets when he was named the top student of the year, achieving an A+ average.

Selected as Co-editor of the student publication – Writers inc., Wellington was described as a leader, who had excelled all year-round while assisting fellow peers during the mentorship programme.

‘I am very happy. I did not think I would top the class but this has been an incredible learning experience for me,’ said Wellington shortly after the graduation ceremony.  ‘I have learned so much and have new found respect for my editors. I am a different reporter now and have been trained to be more focused. I want to implement all that I have learned when writing my stories.’

Wellington first started submitting stories to the ZO as early as 2011, before he was employed as a stringer in 2013. Later that year, Wellington joined the ZO editorial team on a full-time basis. In 2014, the ZO nominated him to be part of Caxton’s one-year editorial training programme in Johannesburg.

The ZO management wishes to congratulate Wellington on his outstanding results and are proud to have him on the ZO news desk.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
