Mtubatuba wallows in filth

Waste builds up along the streets in the town.

MTUBATUBA residents are agitated about the build-up of stinking waste alongside the town’s streets.

One of the residents, Patricia Tomlinson, contacted the Zululand Observer to highlight the filth an apparent disinterest by the Mtubatuba Municipality to clean up the streets.

‘What must tourists, especially international ones, think when passing this mess on their way to St Lucia?’ asked Tomlinson.

While Mtubatuba’s litter problem has been reported on numerous times this year, the situation appears to have spiraled out of control, leaving residential areas overflowing with the unhygienic mess.

The municipality’s Community Services General Manager, Mr Sithole, acknowledged the ‘backlog in waste removal’.

A turnaround strategy has been developed and will take effect from Wednesday, 1 October, he said.

Sithole said population growth in and around Mtubatuba and no ‘supplementary resources’ are the main reasons reasons for the lack of adequate waste removal. ‘Included in the plan is the procurement of a second compactor truck and intensifying clean-up campaigns.’
