Rural NPO faces water crisis

Anxious cry for help as rural NPO faces water crisis.

LOCAL charity organisation Izulu Orphan Projects is facing a logistical nightmare as they struggle to continue their operations in an area that is currently in water crisis.

The NPO, which feeds and cares for 1 700 rural orphans in the Mevamhlophe area of Zululand, is making a desperate appeal to corporate donors to assist them in obtaining a water pump trailer with which to pump river water to continue their projects.

This includes building homes for the desperately poor, as well as running a daily feeding kitchen in their 1 200km2 area of operation.

‘Hundreds of families are reliant on us for their most basic needs – food and shelter,’ said founder and General Manager Kate Bain.

‘We can’t provide either of these things without water, and at the moment, there simply is none.

‘ The exceptionally dry winter, coupled with a lack of infrastructure in our area, means these families are now desperate.

‘ We now need to urgently obtain a trailer with which to pump river water on a daily basis, so that we can continue to run our programmes,’ she said.

Anyone able to assist is asked to urgently contact Izulu Orphan Projects fundraising officer, Laurie Smith, on 078 2223858.
