Brave walkers boost Sanca

Hardy walkers do it for Sanca.

NOT even a gale force southwester could deter more than 250 entrants from taking part in Saturday’s Sanca/Bay Watch ‘Walk Away From Drugs’ event.

Dressed snuggly against the morning chill, the intrepid walkers were first put through their paces by the Boot Camps uMhlathuze warm-up team before setting out from the Zululand Yacht Club for the round trip to Naval Island.

Big attraction for the day was the prize of a computer, printer and scanner kindly donated by BHP Billiton for the school team with the highest number of entrants – added to which was a super computer desk courtesy of Richards Bay IDZ.

This time it was Floraton Primary who walked away with the honours, pipping pirrenial event supporters Veldenvlei Primary into second place.

The latter did not leave empty-handed, gaining a camera from Tata Steel KZN and 10 boxes of A4 paper from Mondi Richards Bay.

In the corporate category, BHP Billiton had the most number of entrants, while the Kobus Riekert Karate Institute team were voted ‘best spirit’ and the Zululand Observer won ‘best banner’.

Oldest walker was Nain Palavar (76), youngest was Baileigh Wynne (12 months) and last finisher was Kimberley Fisher (6).

And of course every one of the participants took home a medal for their support and commitment to a worthy cause, again thanks to BHP Billiton.

  1. Wow, Welldone to all the Zululanders who took part… and great work to the coordinating committee. Great appreciation also goes out to the local corporate companies for supporting the initiative with the motivating prizes!! Our Community really needs to be encouraged to “Shoot for the Stars” and nothing else… together we stand against all the habits.
