Durbanite dies in Mtuba crash

Tasmien Horsley worked for the South African Sugar Association.

A HEAD-ON collision on the R618 on the outskirts of Mtubatuba last Friday morning claimed the life of Tasmien Horsley, while two others were seriously and critically injured.

The accident, involving two light motor vehicles, occurred at about 10.45am.

Marvellous Mabeza Zhou was driving the Ford Bantam while Tasmien Horsley was his passenger.

The two were based in Durban and worked for the South African Sugar Association (SASA).

They had traveled from Durban earlier that morning and were en route to St Lucia. The driver of a red Toyota double-cab bakkie was heading in the opposite direction.

The cause of the accident is unclear, but the 34-year-old Horsley tragically died on impact. Her family was notified immediately and buried her soon after.

Mtubatuba Fire Service officers were on the scene immediately and KZN Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived a short while later.

The drivers of both vehicles were transported by ambulance to Netcare The Bay Hospital in Richards Bay where Zhou continues to receive care.

The SAPS is still investigating the cause of the accident and officers are waiting for witness statements.

  1. Dear Sir/Madam,

I am very frustrated with the life I and my family together with neighbours are living.

I arrived in Mtubatuba, just outside KwaMsane township in 2011, but we still have no water and electricity. I have tried to contact to stakeholders like ward counsellor and municipality, but with no help.

When I approached them with regards to electricity, they told me that they do not offer electricity, but Eskom does. I approached Eskom, who told me that I have to tube the house via an authorized person, the come back to them so that they can calculate what I should pay, which ranges from R3000-R5000 plus the electrician who quoted something like R10000.00 to tube the house. Due o the fact that I don’t have this money, does that mean I should live without electricity?

the issue of water, when I arrived in 2011, they say umfolozi river has no water, but now the river is running. Can you please help.

I am free to be contacted and the survey can be made by ZO newspaper to get more stories from the residents.
