BREAKING NEWS: Port closed!

Oil spill halts shipping in Richards Bay Harbour.

FROM being viewed as merely an environmental threat, all hell broke loose at the Port of Richards Bay this afternoon when shipping movements were cancelled forthwith pending the cleaning-up of oil-polluted vessels.

This after ships refused to leave the harbour with hulls, decks and mooring ropes stained black from the heavy fuel oil slick that resulted from the Engen bunker terminal pipeline break on Monday morning.

Masters demanded their ships be cleaned prior to departure to avoid fines en route or at other discharge ports.
