FOLLOWING recent publicity of the dire state of the St Lucia sewage ponds, the St Lucia Ratepayers Forum (RPA) has, in a press release, ‘called sloppy workmanship to book’.
Numerous failed attempts to contact the engineer in charge of the contract eventually led the RPA to the Director of Works uMkhanyakude District Municipality, Nthuthuko Buthelezi, who was available within 24 hours to meet with the RPA Executive Committee on site.
‘Everyone was shocked at what we saw,’ reported RPA Chairman Rudi Redinger.
He went on to say, ‘Clearly, after the contractors left, there was no commissioning of the new works.’
It was confirmed that large areas of membrane had been stolen, while other areas of the ponds had been damaged by hippos.
Going forward, razor wire fencing currently surrounding the ponds will be removed and replaced with eco-friendly material.
As a result of the membrane theft, on-site security guards will be employed until such time as the re-commissioning is finished and the site secure.
A site meeting with the engineer and contractors to discuss the project was planned for Monday, 17 March.
I KINDLY WANT TO COMMENT ON BEHALF OF MZINGAZI RESIDENCES NEAR THE CROSS (FOUR WAYS CROSS, A RAOD THAT PROCEEDS TO RBM. THERE ARE NO SHELTERS IN AT THE CROSS, THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WHO CATCH TAXI’S AND BUSSES INCLUDING RBM;S OWN WORKERS. WE ALMOST GET WET WHEN ITS RAINNING AND ALSO WHEN IS SUNNY WE FACE A HUGE PROBLEM OF SUN-BURN. THE CONSTRUCTION OFTHE SHELTER THERE WILL MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE. NOT THAT ELECTIONS ARE CLOSE BUT IM QUITE SURE RESPONSIBLE PEOPLE WOULD SEE THIS COMMENT. BY HENDRICK GUMEDE FROM MZINGAZI RICHARDS BAY.
