WHILE working on stricken coal carrier MV Smart on Friday afternoon, members of the shipwreck salvaging crew detected the body of a man floating past.
The sighting was reported to the Richards Bay Operational Response Service (ORS) and the deceased man, believed to be an African male in his mid-twenties, was retrieved after being brought around the Small Craft Harbour.
A post-mortem will be performed on the victim at the Richards Bay mortuary this week to establish his identity and cause of death.
He is presumed to have drowned while bathing at Alkantstrand or one of the northern beaches over the festive season.
A guy drowned at Alkantstrand last Saturday.. there was no report about it in the media but we were surfing in the morning and the lifeguards were patrolling the water looking for someone presumably washed out to sea… This is probably the guy.. condolences to the family…
Could this not be the 27 year old guy who got washed away at Alkantstrand that was mentioned in the ZO article dated 7 January 2014 and headed ‘Two swimmers missing’?
