‘Seeing Red!’ campaign launched

LIKE the rest of the responsible motorists in Zululand, we have had enough of those drivers who fly through red robots after the traffic lights have changed.

In just 10 minutes on Friday morning, at least five cars failed to brake and stop when the lights turned to red as they approached the intersection of Main road and Frank Bull in Empangeni.

This was caught on camera and the Zululand Observer will be sending the photos to the City of uMhlathuze for the attention of, and investigation by, the traffic department.

We intend to do this on a regular basis at various busy and dangerous intersections and to publish them, much as we do the illegal parking in disabled bays, in the hopes that it will contribute to improved driver awareness and habits.

The public is welcome to send us short video clips or sequence photos showing red light violations and we will also pass these on to the authorities.

The ‘Seeing Red!’ initiative was welcomed by Business Against Crime Zululand manager Dave Whittaker, who said the jumping of red robots is ‘one of the City’s biggest challenges at the moment’.

‘One of the spin-off benefits of the proposed CCTV system in the city would have been the ability to catch traffic offenders as well as criminals, which would also have contributed greatly to the municipal coffers.’
