Students get jump-start to career

One hundred students become more employable through college placements

WHILE a tertiary qualification helps young adults to take their first step into the working world, many still struggle to get their foot in the door without having the required practical experience.

To ensure a promising start for some of the region’s most hardworking students, the Umfolozi College has placed 100 of their top learners in various Zululand municipalities, government departments, local companies and businesses, as well as police stations and educational institutions.

With the financial support of the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA), the apprentices will earn stipends of R2 500 per month to assist them with food and transport while gaining crucial experience over periods ranging from 12 to 18 months at their selected host employer.

‘They were selected based on their academic performance, attitudes from our evaluations and absenteeism,’ said Umfolozi College Work Placement Officer, Michélle Steyn.

‘After interviewing each individual, the candidates were then placed with the most suitable employer.

‘It’s a very important exercise, because once these students gain experience and learn how to operate in the real world, they will become far more employable.’

The majority of the learners have been placed at the City of uMhlathuze Municipality, which volunteered to give 27 trainees a chance to work in different departments of the borough as part of its Integrated Development Plan (IDP).
