THE attempted theft of a high voltage cable backfired on two would-be cable thieves when the spade they were using to sever the 11kV line hit the live wire and sent the current through their bodies.
The incident happened in the early hours on Tuesday and left the entire northern section of Alton without electricity for the entire day.

The suspects, who were reportedly seen running from the scene ‘on fire’, abandoned their efforts and left behind the spade, which bears marks of their brush with death.
The electrical supply to Alton was reconnected by the early evening.
