AN attempt to use one front-end loader to remove the broken engine from another had tragic consequences in Alton on Monday evening.
The two machines were parked in front of a business premises in Alumina Allee.
Despite having been warned by onlookers that one of the hydraulic pipes was bulging, the operator was reportedly manipulating the machine above the other one when the pipe burst and the bucket dropped.
One man barely managed to jump off and was struck by the bucket, sustaining serious injuries, while the other took the full weight and was pinned under the bucket.
The victim, a Mozambican national, died immediately.
His name has not been released.
The weight of the bucket is estimated at close to two tons.

It is ok to try and make a buck – but this is a typical pavement operation without any proper equipment such as hoists to do the job safely.

Maintenance is one of the most critical things that always get neglected. It’s a pitty that someone must die before action take place. If there was a daily routine inspection done by a competant person this would have been idetified, the question is would it been fixed? Blaming the operator for not adhear to the warning is 100% correct but the owner of the loader should take overall responsibilety.
Is is clear that the saftey officer was not in the erea , I hope the comp takes what is comming to them !
