Imprisonment for car thief

A man was sentenced to six years imprisonment for stealing a vehicle in KwaDlangezwa last year

A 30-year-old man was sentenced in the Richards Bay Regional Court to six years’ imprisonment half suspended for five years, for a theft of motor vehicle in KwaDlangezwa last year.

Sfundo Ngobese pleaded guilty to stealing the vehicle on 20 February from the complainant’s yard.

In a statement, Ngobese said he had been consuming alcohol with friends at a tavern on that night and after he left he came across the Opel Kadett, which was parked inside a property.

He stole the vehicle which was later recovered with three tyres and the starter missing.

Ngobese is currently serving 18 months imprisonment for house robbery, of which he was convicted in April.

Magistrate Logan Naidoo said the punishment must be a deterrent as every crime of theft of motor vehicle increases the costs for other motorists for insurance and security measures such as tracker devices.
