KWAMSANE SAPS on Monday stopped the funeral of a robbery suspect beaten to death by community members in the Nsolweni Reserve.
According to a police report, Sandile Kunene (23) was reportedly caught red-handed robbing an elderly woman of her pension money on Saturday.
Residents in the neighbourhood near Mtubatuba heard the woman’s cry for help and found the suspect strangling the woman and demanding money from her.
The suspect escaped, but was caught a short while later.
He was beaten and severely injured, and was taken to a clinic for treatment where he succumb to his injuries.
The family of the deceased began preparing for the funeral, but since the case had not been reported, the police stepped in to stop the proceedings after receiving information of the incident.
The body was taken to the Mtubatuba mortuary.
KwaMsane Police opened a murder docket for investigation, but no arrests have yet been made.
