IT is with great disappointment and sadness as a long-standing resident of Richards Bay that I am witness, on a daily basis, to the public’s disrespect for our beautiful public spaces (in this instance as per attached, the Bay Hall area).
This is about to get worse during the festive season and based on recent years’ evidence, very little has been done by the uMhlathuze Municipality in the way of providing proper amenities/facilities to resolve this ongoing problem (eg adequate ablutions, refuse stations and monitoring).
From broken glass, rubbish and faeces, all can be found in this pristine area.
This poses not only a health risk but an environmental risk as well, as various bird species are normally found feeding on scraps.
As a proud resident I normally shy away from showing tourists these areas due to the negative impact it has on the perception of our city in general.
My questions to the leadership of the municipality are simply:
• What is your commitment to adequately address this problem in future?
• What provisions in the form of development of amenities/facilities are in place?
As a professional registered architect and resident I am more than willing to assist the municipality in whatever way I can to resolve the current situation so that we all can enjoy our beautiful public areas in a healthy, safe and environmentally friendly manner.
