THEFT of copper cables and electricity meter boxes remains a concern for police in the Kwamsane area.
This was reported on Thursday at the Non Ferrous Metal Task Team Forum (NFTCC) meeting, a crime fighting initiative of Business against Crime (BAC), where police, local corporates, businesses and scrap metal dealers meet to share information and incidents of non-ferrous metal thefts, crime trends and successful arrests.
Other northern areas where the problem continues to persist is Mtubatuba, Kwambonambi and Hluhluwe, where theft of electricity meter boxes, copper cables, optic fibre cables and telephone line poles are reported regularly.
The impact of non-ferrous metal theft on large corporate companies was highlighted, because not only do they suffer the replacement costs to repair infrastructure but also additional costs to upgrade electronic equipment, alarms and monitoring to safeguard personnel and infrastructure, especially at night.
NFTCC is an integrated body of key role-players that provides strategic guidance and direction for the process of prevention and eradication of theft of non-ferrous metal to ensure the quality supply of strategic services.
