A FATHER of two young children found guilty of rape at the eSikhawini Regional Court on Wednesday, blamed alcohol for his actions.
Manqoba Shandu (30) confessed to sexually assaulting a female student in February this year.
He was sentenced to ten years in prison for the rape of a 19-year-old University of Zululand (Unizulu) student at KwaDlangezwa Mkhwanazi cottages.
According to his statements, he went to the house of the complainant which she shared with his girlfriend at the time, entered the room through the window and raped her.
‘I was drunk at that time and did not know what I was doing,’ said Shandu.
Shandu is already serving a 10 year sentence at Qalakabusha Correctional Services for three counts of robbery, theft and being in the possession of a stolen vehicle, which happened after the rape offence.
The magistrate highlighted the increasing number of student’s rape victims in the area and said that rape suspects should get more serious sentences.
