Leguaan comes a-visiting in Arboretum
Richards Bay couple find scaly creature in their kitchen.
GUESTS often have a way of dropping in unexpectedly, and that was certainly the case last week for Arboretum residents Jasmine and Len Prowse.
This time, it was a four-footed friend that popped in for a brief visit – a large leguaan.
‘It decided to check out our home in Kiepersolkolk, walked through the garage, into the bedrooms and out the kitchen door,’ said Jasmine.
‘We managed to catch it, then released it in the greenbelt on Essenwood Way.’
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s Kevin Green said they regularly get calls to remove leguaans from suburban homes.
‘They forage for food such as eggs and frogs and are often found in swimming pools, unable to get out after chasing after prey.’
Although it is said that the force of a leguaan’s tail can break one’s bones, this is an urban myth that is totally unsubstantiated – but they do have sharp claws and teeth that should be avoided at all costs.
