Acting saved S’boniso’s life

His life took a turn for the worst when he got involved with wrong friends.

RURAL Mkhamanga, kwaKhoza Reserve-born S’boniso Nxumalo has finally found his mojo – that art of acting.

Nxumalo believes he is living proof that no matter how hard life can become, you can still realise your dream as long as you put your mind and soul into it.

His education started at a farm school outside Empangeni, where he developed a love for acting when taking part in a school play in Grade 3.

‘When the teachers asked me what I wanted to become when I finished school, I would tell them I wanted to become an actor,’ Nxumalo said.

His life took a turn for the worst when he got involved with wrong friends. He started drinking a lot and as a result dropped out of school.

After visiting a friend at university one weekend and ‘chilling’ out with other students, Nxumalo went back home and reflected on his life.

Move to Jozi

‘I decided to stop drinking alcohol and after moving to Johannesburg in 2009, I enlisted with casting agents.

‘After what seemed like a lifetime, I got my first break as an extra (barman) in the TV series Muvhango.

‘Then I got another role in eTV’s ‘Stories from Ekasi’, where I acted as a detective in Street Justice.

‘I also acted in the Loksion bioscope movie called Taxi Cheese boy.

‘My current role is Bra Zakes, a taxi owner in the popular Mzansi’s Isibaya, which is still being filmed.

‘I’m also featuring in ‘The Road’, a single scene still to appear on TV.

Nxumalo thanks his family for the support they gave him, especially his mother.

‘Even my friends and people back home are now proud of the person I have become, not the old, always drunk S’boniso I used to be,’ he said.

Nxumalo advises other young people to refrain from substance abuse.

‘It all starts with a drop of alcohol. Before you know it you have become an alcoholic and a drug addict,’ he cautioned.
