UPDATE: Second arrest for cop killing

Police found pictures of a pile of money on the suspects' cell phone.

THE second suspect in the robbery that led to the murder of Sergeant Niren ‘Foxy’ Ramsaroop (40) was arrested on Tuesday night.

Empangeni detectives together with members of the Visible Policing Unit and K9 unit members netted the 23-year-old as he was travelling on the R34 in a private meter taxi.

The suspect had managed to evade police after he and another man robbed three women of a reported R100 000 of stokvel money on Saturday.

One suspect was involved in a struggle with Sgt Ramsaroop, during which he drew a firearm and shot the officer once in the chest.

Ramsaroop returned fire, wounding the suspect in the leg, before succumbing to his wound.

The 41-year-old suspect was then taken to hospital for treatment, but has since been discharged and is being held by police until his first court appearance scheduled for 23 November.

The remaining suspect fled with the money.

Empangeni detectives, acting on information, set up an operation to apprehend the man.

At around 7.30pm officers managed to corner the suspect at the Qalakabusha intersection on the R34.

He was arrested in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol and is expected to appear in court today (Thursday).

Officers found pictures of a pile of money on his cellphone, and police were working to recover the cash on Wednesday.

A second man who was travelling with the suspect was also arrested, also in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

He is currently out on bail for another charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm.
