Thieves steal Mbonambi reservoir
Now, a huge hole is all that remains on the construction site – an especially disturbing outcome given the current drought.
A MASSIVE reservoir has been stolen, piece by piece, even before it could be put into service.
Known as the Mbonambi Reservoir and located between Mzingazi township and the coastal dunes, the 4.7Ml rubber-lined reservoir was built to store and supply water for Mbonambi Water Phase 2.
Now, a huge hole is all that remains on the construction site – an especially disturbing outcome given the current drought.
The uThungulu District Municipality (UDM) has confirmed the loss, which would run into millions.
‘Mbonambi Water Phase 2 is still under construction and earlier this year, the 4.7Ml earth lined reservoir was found to be vandalised,’ said UDM Municipal Manager Mandla Nkosi.
‘The fence, valves, reservoir lining and steel fittings were all stolen on site.
‘The case was reported to the SAPS.
‘Our engineers are currently looking at other options of having a storage structure that will comply with RBM conditions and the existing design principles.
‘This is a criminal matter that is in the hands of the SAPS and cannot thus be labelled a waste of public funds.’
