Priest on indecency charge

eShowe diocese priest on trial for indecency

A PRIEST hosted by the eShowe Catholic Diocese was arrested on Friday 13 September as he left a court in Brits after standing trial for assault and acts of indecency.

The priest, whose identity has not revealed is believed to be in his fifties and comes from Aachen in western Germany.

He was arrested on an international warrant and a German extradition request issued several years ago according to sources familiar with the case.

Bail was set at R5 000 on condition he stays in KZN.

His trial in South African will start on 8 November.

It is alleged that the acts of indecency were committed in 2008 at a German-language Catholic youth camp near Johannesburg.

The four boys were then aged between nine and 10 years.

They had complained about offers to sleep in the priest’s bed and inappropriate fondling.

After November’s hearing the priest could be extradited to Germany.

Archbishop William Slattery speaking on behalf of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference said the Church did not invite nor appoint him to work for the church.

He had apparently come to South Africa with some cases pending in Germany and has been here for a number of years.
