Solomon has the wisdom for tourism

Zululand's tour guide and entrepreneur Solomon Gumede is fascinated with historical sites.

FOR historical insights about Zululand areas, Solomon Gumede (46), has the wisdom and knowledge to show the absolute best the region has to offer.

The passionate tour guide and entrepreneur from KwaDube Village in eSikhaleni is fascinated about tourism, travel, history and wildlife.

He started his thriving business Solo Travel Tours in 2009 after he heard a radio advert on how people can contribute to the country’s tourism sector.

‘After I heard that information I followed it up because I was already interested in tourism. I bought my first car with the aim to transport tourists from the Richards Bay Airport to their hotels.

‘It was not easy, but I was determined to make it work,’ he said.

Even though Solomon had a bumpy start, he is now a proud owner of four tour buses, and now sailing smoothly to the top and is a member of uMhlathuze Community Tourism Organisation.

‘Our region is rich with culture and history, and it is important to showcase it to the world,’

Through his company he transports visitors to various destinations around the area including eCubhu Dam in eMpempeni, KwaBulawayo Heritage site, Shakaland and various game reserves.

He hopes to open his own restaurant at eCubhu Dam and serve traditional food to visitors and locals while viewing a beautiful site populated by hippos and crocodiles.
