Local kick boxers on target

Empangeni fighters earned their way at the 2015 National Championships held in Cape Town.

FIGHTERS from the Paul Caves Kickboxing Club in Empangeni have returned from the recent 2015 National Championships held in Cape Town last week, their bags weighed down with a few medals.

The group of fighters earned themselves no fewer than 14 medals in their respective age categories and classes.

Coach Johann Smit said he was impressed with the performances of his students.

‘This was the third year our club took part and I think we did really well,’ he said.

Smit is currently accepting new students who he will teach the art of self-defence in the form of mixed martial arts.

Results

Irfaan Sabat (13): Form – gold medal. Points fighting – bronze. Weapons – fourth.

Mario Minichiello (13): Form – silver medal. Weapons – bronze medal. Points fighting – bronze medal.

Johann Smit (Senior, 36 to 45): Points fighting – silver.

Paolo Minichiello (Senior, 45 and up): Form – gold medal. Weapons – gold medal

Aaryan Poorun (11): Weapons – bronze. Form – silver. Weapons – bronze. Points fighting – bronze (he also earned a bronze medal in the semi-finals).

Rudhra Poorun (7): Points fighting – bronze. Semi-final – fourth.

Khwezi Dlamini (13): Weapons – gold

Other fighters included Hamzah Sabat (10) who earned a fifth place, Mikaeel Sabat (7) and Brandon Smit (15) as well as Ray and Jodie Motala.

Aaryan also earned fourth in traditional kata and sixth in weapons kata, while Rudhra earned fifth and sixth in traditional and weapons kata respectively.

For these positions, they earned developmental colours which will allow them to take part in future competitions.
