Man pays R700 to rescue baby duiker

The men were carrying the small buck by its legs.

A ONE-MONTH-OLD Grey Duiker escaped a nasty fate after being rescued by a concerned citizen.

Empangeni businessman Doug White was returning to town from eShowe on Thursday when he spotted a couple of men carrying the small buck by its legs.

‘At first I drove past,’ said White, ‘but then I just couldn’t take it and turned around.’

White stopped the men and bartered the release of the duiker, forking out R700 to spring the buck from its fate.

‘I just wouldn’t have been able to live with myself,’ he said.

White then took the duiker to the Empangeni Veterinary Hospital, where Geoff Fourie confirmed she was healthy and showed no signs of being caught in a snare.

Baby duikers are known for freezing on the spot if their mother is shot by hunters, which is probably how the ‘hunters’ managed to carry it off.

After taking his twin children, Troy and Keira, for a short visit, the baby duiker was transported to the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife in Durban.
