Pelican Island road refurbishment on the cards

The filler will be trucked away for use at a number of locations where infrastructure rehabilitation is required.

THE City of uMhlathuze is to benefit from 2 000 tons of free filler material that will be used for a number of engineering improvements.

Donated by Mondi following civil demolition work on site, the huge blocks of ‘clean’ cement are being temporarily stockpiled on open ground adjacent to the Alton robots on the John Ross Parkway.

But the material will soon be trucked away for use at a number of locations where infrastructure rehabilitation is required.

‘This is a great bonus for us,’ said Gustav Steinhobel of the City’s Engineering Technical Services Department.

‘We are looking specifically at places where there have been excessive washaways, such as the road at Pelican Island and the banks of the Mzingazi Canal.

‘This is ideal filler material for stabilising the banks and for the sub-surface of the road, and there are other applications as well.

‘An extra plus is that the cement had not been reinforced, which makes it both easier to use as well as environment-friendly.’
