Impressive manoeuvres in the docks

Airborne SA and French troops rescue hijacked liner in Richards Bay

THE combined ‘anti-piracy’ rescue operation between SA Navy and southern Indian Ocean French Naval Forces stationed at Le Reunion off Naval Island on Thursday, made an impressive spectacle.

In front of a large VIP crowd aboard the SAS Protea, the combined forces simulated pirates boarding a ‘passenger vessel’ at sea.

Through a combination of land, sea and air deployment of specialised troops, the pirates were overcome and arrested.

The display formed part of ‘Operation Oxide’, a joint SA and French naval exercise taking place off Richards Bay.
