TAKING on the role of Principal at any school is a daunting task. But for Nonhlanhla Nzuza of Sthandiwe Special School her passion and the drive to help children with special needs make all the challenges worthwhile.
Nzuza has been Principal of Sthandiwe in Nkandla for a decade now, and her selfless nature has brought much joy and happiness to the lives of many pupils. Applying her education experience, she is dedicated to steer mentally and physically challenged pupils towards reaching their full potential. Every child she believes must have access to skills development programmes such as woodwork, sewing, needle and beadwork and baking so that they can take their rightful place in society.
‘The school currently faces financial challenges as the funds received from the Department of Education is not enough to sustain the boarding facilities, Nzuza says.
‘There are 103 children on the waiting list hoping to be enrolled owing to the lack of space and funds,’ says Nzuza.
To help raise funds, the school sells products made as part of the skills development programmes to the local community. Pupils are also involved in maintaining a vegetable garden which helps feed the pupils.
Sthandiwe Special School gives pupils the opportunity to participate in various sports which build their confidence and exposes them to a fun and exciting environment.
‘I am proud of these pupils who see beyond their disabilities and live with such enthusiasm,’ says Nzuza.
This humble Principal, who is also a wife and mother of three, enjoys reading books, going to church and looks forward to empowering the women within her community in Nkandla.
The quest to find potential donors continues for Nzuza. If you would like to help the school with either time or financial aid, contact Nzuza on 035 8330235.
