WATCH: Suzelle makes biltong in celebration of Biltong Day

TODAY is National Biltong Day, go ahead tuck into this meaty snack.

BILTONG is everywhere.

Lunch boxes, rugby boxes, at movies, and in front of TVs. It’s on pizzas, in sauces, soups, salads and we even put it on steaks, it’s that awesome. That’s why South African’s had to reserve a special day to celebrate this tasty treat – 12 September.

According to historic recipe books, the indigenous peoples of Southern Africa and the Dutch created biltong.

The Khoisan first had the crafty idea of preserving meat by cutting it into long strips and hanging it out to dry. The Dutch then, literally, added their own flavour to the process using vinegar, saltpetre and spices including pepper, coriander and cloves.
