Train lines re-opened
Plenty of damage but no deaths or serious injuries after train pile-up
TRANSNET Freight Rail reported the line within the Port of Richards Bay is open and all operations are back to normal following a train derailment earlier this week.
With regards to costs, nothing can be confirmed at this stage as investigations are still underway.
MONDAY 16 SEPTEMBER
AN investigation is underway after a serious train derailment within the Port of Richards Bay early Sunday morning.
Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) reported that at 6.15am, six light locomotives collided with the rear-end of an empty train at TFR siding 2279.
‘Three locomotives and seven wagons derailed,’ said spokesperson Sandile Simelane.
‘As a result, two departure lines and two of the five arrival lines were closed and traffic was channelled through the remaining three arrival lines.
‘To mitigate the impact of the accident, TFR decided to move to this Monday the once-a-month total closure of the line (double line occupation) for maintenance which was scheduled for next week Monday.’
TFR infrastructure teams were hard at work to open one line by 4pm last night (Monday) and the rest by 9pm.
‘No one has been injured and the TFR’s Risk department is on site to assess the situation so as to determine the cause of the accident,’ said Simelane.
This is human error, accidents don’t happen by themselves, people need to start taking note and be alert of what they are doing. Look at the cost of this “accident.” When you go to work, then go to work awake and aware of whats going on around you.
