NFD returnees, Amazulu FC caused a major upset by beating Premier League hotshots Mamelodi Sundowns on penalties to claim the uThungulu Mayoral Cup on Saturday at the uMhlathuze Stadium in Richards Bay.

After a 1-1 draw in the final showdown on the day, the two sides headed into penalties.

Both sides’ strikers were on target, deadlocking the scores at 5-a-piece, which resulted in sudden death spot kicks.

After an unplanned miss from favourites Sundowns, Amazulu kept their cool to beat the keeper and lift the trophy.

In the first game played earlier in the day, local soccer outfit Thanda Royal Zulu got hammered 4-0 by Sundowns.

Amazulu then edged Milford FC out of the competition when beating the local outfit 2-1.

Fans were treated to a day full of top soccer action, with popular Ukhozi radio presenters Thanda Ndlovu and Joe Hutla also making their presence felt.

Soccer celebs such as Clive Barker and Stewart Baxter were also at the Stadium catching all the jam-packed action.
