WHILE the public are scrambling for gas, scammers are reportedly having a blast.
The Richards Bay police is calling on companies and community members to be aware of the latest con, involving fraudsters sending fake quotes with reputable LPG suppliers’ titles and logos on the documents to potential buyers.
One businessman received a quote of R74 140 on 18 August, but fortunately noticed a spelling mistake in the company name and called the crook’s bluff.
‘With the current gas shortage, scammers are seeing a gap in the market and taking advantage of it,’ said Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson, Captain Debbie Ferreira.
‘We urge Zululanders to read through quotation and invoice documents carefully and verify the information before making a payment.’
The lack of LPG availability across the country has been largely blamed on high demand during winter, load-shedding, high electricity costs, maintenance shutdowns at refineries and delays in building sufficient gas storage facilities.
