Fraud accused traffic officers still at work
The officers are remaining inside the traffic department offices, performing administrative duties
CORRUPTION accused Melmoth traffic officers appeared in court together for the first time last week, after being granted bail in separate appearances in July.
Deputy Chief Traffic Officer Thokozani Dladla (30) and Traffic Officer Sakhile Mandlenkosi Mthabela (33) were arrested during a sting operation conducted by the Hawks Anti-Corruption unit earlier this year.
This after authorities received a tip-off from a truck driver who was being cajoled into paying a R2 500 bribe to have his truck released from the weighbridge impound.
The Zululand Observer previously reported that both men had returned to work and were still in uniform, but can now report that they have since been taken off the streets and placed on administrative duties in plain clothes.
Questions sent to the Municipal Manager of Mthonjaneni (Melmoth) Municipality, Raymond Nguni via e-mail on 14 August, remain unanswered.
The traffic officers will appear in court again on 20 October.
