Obama to have some Zulus on his stoep

Zululand student choir jets off to America in September to perform at the White House

SONGBIRDS of the University of Zululand (Unizulu) choir will jet off to the United States of America next week on a 20-day tour, concluding with a performance at the White House in Washington DC in the presence of President Barack Obama.

The tour has come about as a result of a 20-year-long partnership with Appalachian State University in North Carolina.

Only 14 members of the choir were selected based on singing ability, conduct and seniority.

Starting with three concert performances in collaboration with the Appalachian State University, the Unizulu members will work with experienced music lecturers who have previously worked with top SA musicians such as Hugh Masekela and Abdullah Ibrahim.

‘The group will also visit the studio in which Celine Dion and Westlife have recorded,’ said Unizulu Choirmaster Bhekani Buthelezi.

‘Thereafter the choir will tour other parts of the US with renowned producer Miles Comiskey, including Alaska and Washington DC.

‘Our choir will also offer workshops on South Africa music.’ Buthelezi said.
