District empowers special needs groups

uThungulu District Municipality raises the empowerment bar

THERE was much joy on Monday when the uThungulu District Municipality (UDM) handed over much needed materials to Special Programmes (SP) groups they have trained.

The recipients included senior citizens, disabled persons and gender-based disadvantaged groups.

Among the items delivered were silk screen printing machines that, following the training they received, will enable disabled persons to conduct business by printing T-shirts.

This UDM development tool was provided in collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture.

Enhancing economic growth, alleviating poverty and improving the quality of life for women is a top priority, hence groups of women from all six UDM municipalities were given the opportunity to be trained in designing and crocheting of handbags and cushions.

Classified as a sustainable project since the products are always in demand, materials were also supplied so trading in support of their families can begin at once.

Under the banner of promoting ‘active ageing’, senior citizens were given equipment that will help them prepare for the upcoming Golden Games.

Quality of life

The aim is to enhance the quality of life and improve the health of the elderly by engaging them in activities that promote an optimal level of social, physical and mental well-being.

The donation of sport equipment for people with disabilities was especially welcomed.

This because of the rehabilitative effect sport can have not only on the physical body and mental state, but also on rehabilitating people with disabilities into society.

The UDM Sport and Health Awareness Day for People with Disabilities was done in collaboration with the Department of Health and Department of Sport and Recreation.
