THURSDAY’S excellent Issues at Stake column ‘SA edging towards economic precipice’ by Dr Irrshad Kaseeram sketched a frightening picture of where this country is headed economically if leaders of substance cannot be found soon to pull South Africa out of the quicksand it is fast sinking into.
There is a groundswell of similar opinion by top economic experts – locally and internationally.
As usual, response from government and trade unions in terms of workable solutions are virtually non-existent – only sloganeering, the blame game and unreasonable labour demands.
To quote Kaseeram: ‘There is a leadership paralysis borne out of a blinkered socialist mindset.’
Equally disturbing is Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s comment last week that the target of reaching six million jobs by 2019 is attainable.
I held high hopes of some intellectual infusion when Ramaphosa, a reckoned businessman, entered the government ranks, but how on earth can he substantiate such a claim? We have heard all this optimistic fantasies before.
We are no doubt still living in cloud cuckoo land.
