Local choir on top their game

Birdswood Secondary school choir came out on top in national competition.

EXCITEMENT was the order of the day at Birdswood Secondary, when the school’s choir arrived on Thursday waving two new trophy’s in the air.

The group walked away from the provincial rounds of the South African schools choral eisteddfod as the winners of the ‘Africa Union song’ and ‘Afrikaans’ categories.

Hosted in Johannesburg last week, the final round saw all nine provinces competing against one another, with each choir getting the opportunity of performing two songs each.

The local school’s 60-member choir outshone their opponents and the judges crowned them as the new category winners.

‘Our choir was well prepared and their hard work has paid off. They put in lots of time to practice and master the art,’ said the school’s Deputy Principal, Mandla Mdaka.

‘Every teacher at the school contributed in the choir’s success and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to them,’

Along with the trophies and titles, the school’s choir also walked away with two brand new pianos, which were the sponsored prizes this year.
