UPDATE: Cop murder suspect to undergo age assessment

eSikhaleni murdered cop case postponed to 27 July.

THE youngest murder accused involved in the murder of eSikhaleni policeman, Warrant Officer Johannes Ngwane, was moved to juvenile cells on Thursday.

Minenhle Shobede will also undergo an age assessment to verify his age.

This emerged when all five suspects appeared before the eSikhaleni District Magistrate’s Court for a bail application.

They were accused of strangling Ngwane to death inside the police cells last month, while he was conducting his routine afternoon search, after one prisoner lured him inside the cell and pretended to be sick.

To certify the age claim, the defense previously produced a copy of Minehle’s birth certificate provided by his older brother in Johannesburg, however, the legitimacy of the document was questioned by the prosecutor.

At a previous court appearance, the prosecutor revealed that Shobede had told the court he was 18-years-old when he previously appeared on a separate charge.

The case was postponed to 27 July for further investigation, and all suspects will remain in custody.
