‘THE struggle in South Africa was indeed about land, because all our ideas could not be implemented in space.
‘Even though this struggle remains a tough one, we have made great strides in addressing the land question.
‘It must be said that we are in this mess because of that notorious 1913 Land Act.’
This was the sentiment expressed last week by the Minister in the Presidency, Jeff Radebe.
Addressing an ANC Cadre’s Forum in celebration of the 60 years of the Freedom Charter, Radebe told a packed uMfolozi TVET College Hall that various land claims have been settled throughout the country.
‘We want to encourage you to continue lodging land claims, as this a free government service.
‘We also acknowledge that more work still needs to be done.
Freedom Charter
‘We are doing this in the spirit of the Freedom Charter we are celebrating today, which says the land shall be shared among those who work it.
‘We can not hide the fact that our people have been robbed of their birthright to land, liberty and peace by a form of government founded on injustice and inequality.’
Radebe said the current government was living proof of the principle that says South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white and that no government can justly claim authority unless it is based on the will of all the people.
He also gave a brief background of the Freedom Charter and how it was adopted.
‘This document called the Freedom Charter represents the historic vision of the ANC.
‘It informs our policy coherent as an organisation, reflects the discipline of the ANC and also reflects the objectives of the type of a society that we want to build,’ he said.
The celebration hosted by the Musa Dladla Region kicked off with the laying of the wreath at eSikhaleni’s Memorial Arch, where Regional Chairperson Thulani Mashaba, KZN PEC Member Bheki Ntuli, representatives of the Youth League and Women’s League paid tribute to their fallen heroes and heroines.
