Concerns over lack of service delivery

Municipal employees’ nonchalant attitude angers Alton residents.

COMPLAINTS about a leaking fire hydrant in Alton, Richards Bay have reportedly been ignored since December last year.

Various business people in the vicinity are fed up that the problem has not been addressed and the hydrant remains faulty.

A municipal employee allegedly just shrugged the problem off as being the responsibility of the property owner.

‘I could not believe this! We have a water shortage and our municipality shrugs their shoulders. Very sad,’ said Roxanne Dyman.

With the current water crisis being a regional topic of discussion, the lack of urgency to repair the hydrant infuriated complainants.

Spokesperson for uMhlathuze Municipality, Mdu Ncalane said the issue was unfortunate.

‘We regret the incident as well as the delay. We are not at this stage certain as to whether the complaint reached the municipality or not, as we do not have this record.’

Ncalane went on to add that through further internal investigation, the matter would be seen to, according to the nature of the water leak.

‘We appreciate complaints from the public and encourage this practice, but all complaints must be directed to the municipality for reference purposes.

‘We are aware of the water crises and we wouldn’t want to lose a single drop due to negligence,’ he said.
