Let us rise for greatness

Letter of the Week.

THE Soweto Uprising was a series of protests led by high school students in our country, that began on the morning of 16 June 1976.

Students flooded the streets of Soweto in response to the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in local schools.

An estimated 20 000 students took part, 700 of them died.

Now a public holiday in remembrance of these events, the youth of today spends the day partying, drinking and getting into fights at night clubs and the beach. What is this?

Yes, you are young and you are free; but use this to continue to bring about change in your community.

Let us commemorate the history of our youth by honouring their acts.

Why are young girls pregnant in high school? Why are young boys dropping out of school to run the streets?

Let us be an educated generation, respectful of our history and mindful of our futures.
