A 76-year-old grandfather is in custody for allegedly raping his two-year-old granddaughter, while she was briefly left in his care by her grandmother.
He is awaiting a formal bail application, currently pending in the Mtubatuba District Court.
The complainant in the matter is his wife, who says in her affidavit, she returned unexpectedly and caught him red-handed.
She reportedly asked him why he did the act she witnessed and he allegedly responded that he was only playing with the toddler, but later said he did not know what he was doing, was wrong.
His wife said he is sharing the residence with both herself and the alleged victim and they are afraid of him.
They appealed to the court to refuse his application.
She also said he had been accused of raping one of her daughters before, but the matter was withdrawn owing to lack of evidence.
Names have been withheld to protect the identity of the toddler.
