A ROUTINE police patrol in Mtubatuba on Friday night turned into a high speed car chase and an armed conflict in which one suspect was killed.
During the patrol, police officers came across a suspicious looking vehicle and attempted to apprehend the two occupants who, instead, chose to flee. The car chase ended in the Mondi forest on the outskirts of town where the occupants abandoned the vehicle, opened fire on police officers and fled on foot.
Police officers retaliated and one of the suspects was killed during the armed conflict.
The other suspect is still at large. Police officers said the suspects’ Daewoo vehicle appears to be made up of numerous stolen parts and investigations are underway.
