ONE arrest has been made in connection with last week’s armed robbery at Maputaland Guest House in St Lucia, while two suspects remain at large.
The man, who is due to appear at Mtubatuba Magistrate’s Court today (Monday), was arrested on Wednesday night at Bhobhoza, on the outskirts of Mtubatuba.
Some of the stolen jewellery, the two stolen firearms and cameras were recovered but not the stolen money.
Mtubatuba SAPS Station Commissioner, Colonel Mngomezulu, said this is a major breakthrough in the case and they hope to arrest the two remaining suspects imminently.
The armed robbery occurred just after 8am on Tuesday.
A guesthouse owner, two staff members and two guests were held at gunpoint and tied up while the three suspects ransacked the office and bedroom, and stole the contents of the safe before fleeing in the victims’ vehicle, which was recovered shortly after the incident.
A family member of the victims commended the ‘unbelievable police work’ and said, ‘The response of security, SAPS, Tracker and the St Lucia community was nothing short of astounding’.
