Criminals target homes during load-shedding

Criminals seem to be taking advantage of the scheduled power outages.

CRIME statistics in the Richards Bay communities has peaked over the last couple of weeks, with criminals targeting homes during Eskom’s implemented blackouts.

With alarm systems and electric fences being disabled during these scheduled times, a number of residents have fallen victim to house break-ins and other associated crimes.

According to the Richards Bay SAPS, the top three areas affected are Meerensee, Mzingazi and Arboretum.

Richards Bay Police’s Communications Officer, Debbie Ferreira said, ‘The possibility of these criminals operating in a syndicate has not been ruled out.

‘Their modus operandi seems to be forcing an entry through windows and doors, and in some cases through the roof of homes.

‘We urge residents to take the necessary precautions. Always ensure your home is securely locked, alarms are reactivated and report any suspicious behaviour to the nearest police station.’

A recent incident in Meerensee involved two suspects forcing their way through the victims’ window. Although the complainant was left unharmed, the suspect managed to flee with the victim’s personal belongings.

This was just one of the many other reported cases.

Business Against Crime’s Manager, Dave Whittaker who also monitors the Richards Bay Sharing Criminal Activity Facebook page advises local residents to be extra cautious when load-shedding is in effect.

‘We advise people to have a larger battery fitted to alarm systems to ensure alarms stay functional.

‘Residents should also consider putting up low wattage LED lights outside the house. These could run off a vehicle’s battery which is mounted in the home and is trickle charged. This will keep your home illuminated outside during the night hours, and deter criminals,’ he said.

Aside from house break-ins, remote jamming has also become a common criminal trend and vehicle owners are advised to be vigilant.
