THANKS to an initiative by the uMhlathuze Community Tourism Organisation (uCTO), a group of young township men enjoyed high speed jetski action at Pelican Island on Saturday.
Their experience under the guidance of seasoned Yamaha coaches not only gave them insight into the way to handle these powerful machines, but also introduced them to a sport generally not associated with people of colour.
‘The seven guys who attended the jetski experience are from a Christian church called Rehoboth and form part of the youth of that church,’ said uCTO committee member Lindani Mthembu.
‘They found the jetski riding great fun and some are even considering it as a sport to pursue in future.
‘For us, we see sport as one of the biggest tools to accomplish social cohesion and also to get the alarming number of youth away from drugs and criminal activities.
‘Of note was how they appreciated the discipline involved in the sport, as per the brief but detailed safety lesson they were given by the instructors before being taken out on the water.’
