Top finance post for City manager

City of uMhlathuze’ CFO will serve on the Accounting Standards Board.

UMHLATHUZE Municipality’s Chief Financial Officer Mxolisi Kunene has been appointed to serve as one of the board members on the Accounting Standards Board (ASB).

Appointed by National Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene, this additional position will see Kunene serving on the ASB for a period of three years.

‘I’m ready to make a meaningful contribution to the Board and country. I have been working in local government for the past 18 years – six of those as Chief Financial Officer of uMhlathuze Municipality,’ he said.

He holds a B-Tech Degree and National Diploma in Financial Management, and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Business Leadership.

‘I pride myself in being associated with the uMhlathuze Municipality because we believe in quality internal controls, service delivery and implementing laws and regulations,’ he added.

City Council Speaker, Cllr Mdu Mhlongo, said the municipality continues to lead by example when it comes to service delivery and good governance.

‘We congratulate our CFO on this appointment and we are humbled as the council to have him manage our finances.

‘His skills and ability to advise have delivered us two clean audits. This means we are able to budget accordingly. We are able to properly manage public finances and our systems are in good health to allow for smooth operations and to fight corruption and malpractices.

‘We will not be complacent, but this appointment places more challenges on him to continue to be a good financial leader and for us as the City of uMhlathuze to constantly keep our books in good order,’ Mhlongo said.

The ASB consists of 10 board members who are each appointed by the Minister of Finance. Their purpose is to serve the public interest by setting Standards of Generally Recognised Accounting Practice for all stakeholders in the public sector.

The Minister of Finance consults the Auditor General before making an appointment.
