Foreigners take precautionary measures

Melmoth and Ulundi foreigners close shop early following threats.

FEARING xenophobic attacks, foreign businesses in Ulundi and Melmoth closed doors early on Wednesday afternoon.

The actions by all foreigners, including Chinese businessmen, came as a surprise to authorities as the first they knew of the threats was when the shop owners closed their doors at around 3pm.

Some of the foreigners went to the local police stations in both towns seeking police protection.

The police monitored the situation throughout the night, but by morning there were no reports of violence.

The foreigners said they reacted to threats from locals in the towns.
