RESPONDING to a report that a timber truck was weaving its way along the John Ross Parkway, members of a security company were amazed to find an 11-year-old boy behind the wheel.
‘The called came in around noon on Sunday that the truck was driving erratically and posing a danger to other traffic,’ said Corrie Pretorius of Northern Region Protection Services.
‘We intercepted it near the Mondi robots and the driver pulled over.
‘We could hardly believe our eyes when this young boy climbed out.
‘He was scarcely able to reach the pedals and had to stand to do so.
‘On top of that, there was no ignition key and the truck was hot-wired. Nor was the load of logs on the back secured in any way.’
Unable to reach the traffic department, Pretorius contacted the Flying Squad, who were soon on scene, followed by a SAPS patrol van.
‘The boy said he had driven the truck from the port because the drivers had passed out, and was on his way to eSikhaleni.
‘The truck’s owner later arrived on scene by taxi and was questioned by the police.’
